Chile is the most important provider of South American wines to the world's export markets. Since the fall of Pinochet in 1989 the wine industry has boomed with much foreign investment in vineyards and wineries. The climate is near-perfect for wine production with the prevailing cool winds from the Pacific, snowmelt from the Andes for irrigation and a long ripening season. Phylloxera is not present so there is no need for grafting of vines.
