Most of the vineyards in Argentina lie close to the Andes in irrigated pockets in the subtropical north to the Rio Negro in the south. The majority of the vineyards are found at higher altitudes in suitably cool sites. Rainfall can be low in the rain shadow of the Andes but melt water is used for irrigation purposes. For marketing purposes Argentina focuses on the Malbec grape for full-bodied brambly reds and Torrontés for dry aromatic whites. Several Italian and Spanish varieties may be found as well as the International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay & Viognier.
