Spirits are drinks that have been produced by the concentration of alcohol present in a fermented liquid by distillation. All spirits are colourless when they come off the still, any colour in the final product comes from the ageing process or the addition of colouring material at the time of blending and bottling.
Liqueurs are different to flavoured spirits as they have been sweetened as well. Some traditional liqueurs are based on specific aged spirits such as Whisky (Drambuie) or Cognac (Grand Marnier), but many others are simply made by infusing or macerating flavouring ingredients in the spirit and adding sugar.
