The Sherry region takes its name from the Southern Spanish town of Jerez in the province of Càdiz in Andalucia. The wines have been popular in Britain since Tudor times and by the 1850's accounted for 40% of all wine sales. The image of Sherry declined seriously in the 1970's and 80's due to overproduction and the flooding of the markets with low quality wines, but now sales have stabilised and an increase in high quality wines such as Manzanillas, Finos and age dated wines have been noted.
