The vineyards of the Côte D'Or are where the best wines of Burgundy are made. They lie in a narrow band on east-facing slopes to gain the benefit of the rising sun and enjoying the protection of the Morvan hills behind them. Where limestone predominates, Chardonnay is grown, elsewhere it is Pinot Noir. In the Northern Côte de Nuits the fullest-bodied, longest-lived reds are produced and all the red Grand Cru (except Corton) wines are found here. In the southern Côte de Beaune you find the finest Grand Cru whites (except Musigny Blanc) and slightly lighter red wines.
