John Blandy began shipping Madeira in 1811 and even today the Blandy Family continues to work in the business, but now in partnership with the Symington Family of Port fame. The production of Madeira is unique as the wine is either gently heated in vats (estufagem) or slowly baked in casks (canteiro) by the natural warmth of this sub-tropical island's climate. Blandy's wines vary in sweetness and are made from different grape varieties depending on the style and age the final blend will assume. The wines always have a naturally high acidity that harmoniously combines with the sweetness and body and leaves a striking freshness on the finish.
