Madeira lies 500km west of Morocco in the North Atlantic Ocean and is an autonomous region within Portugal. The Island is mountainous and most of the vineyards are found on the lower slopes of the Northern and Southern Coasts. Tinta Negra Mole accounts for over 80% of the plantings producing pale red wine and is very adaptable for making a range of styles from sweet through to dry. It is usually only used for making younger wines, but the colour gives the impression that these wines have more age. All the wines display high acidity and burnt sugar aromas.
