Rising in the Alps and flowing to the Mediterranean near Marseilles, the Rhône Valley is considered the second largest quality vineyard region in the world. The Northern Rhône has the higher reputation, but only accounts for 5% of total production. Here the valley is narrow and steep which gives optimal exposure to the sun and protection from the Mistral wind. Syrah is the dominant grape but the white grapes of Viognier, Rousanne and Marsanne are also found here.
