Italy battles with France for being the world's largest producer and exporter of wine, but is only in the last half century that it has revived its role as a producer of high quality wines. The variety of Italian wines is enormous, but there are four quality levels which are recognised in Italian Wine law. Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita is the highest level and includes Asti, Barbaresco, Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Gavi, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano.
