Spain has a larger area under vine than France or Italy but its annual production is much less due to low vine densities and arid climate. Each wine region has its own Conejo Regulador or controlling body that guarantees the classifications of the wine. There are five classifications in the Spanish hierarchy: Denominación de Origen Calificada; Denominación de Origen - Pago (single estate); Denominación de Origen; Vino de la Tierra and Vino de Mesa. In addition many regions have ageing qualifications, which in ascending order are: Vino Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva.
