Since Portugal joined the EU there has been an emphasis on producing many more high quality wines, often produced from Single Estates or Quintas. Portugal has a profusion of indigenous grape varieties and this combined with very diverse climatic condition produces wines of large regional contrasts. There are four grades of Denomination in the appellation hierarchy which in descending order are: Denominaçäo de Origem Controlada, Indicaçäo de Proveniencia Regulamentada, Vinho Regional and Vinho de Mesa.
